No fancy slings tonight. Just straight spirits after what turned into an 11 hour day capped off by a desperate search for a UPS pickup at 9PM (Boston, South Station, if you’re curious). Anyway this is a drink I’ve had on my list to make for a few weeks, via Gary Regan’s 101 Best New Cocktails 2013: Old Quartermaster (Michael Shea, Rum Club, Portland, OR). The drink calls for the 100-proof Mount Gay Eclipse Black rum, which I don’t have, so I used my only Barbados rum, the Plantation 5-Year spiked with a bit of Smith & Cross for the overproof pot still funkiness. I may not have gone heavy enough on the S&C because this drink needs more proof to counteract the (delicious) sweetness of PX sherry. But even in this adulterated form its still pretty damn tasty and a good way to end a very long day: 1 oz Mount Gay Eclipse Black rum (generous 1/8 oz Smith & Cross + Plantation 5-Year), .75 oz Famous Grouse blended scotch, .5 oz Pedro Ximenez sherry (Barbadillo), stirred and strained, garnished with 4 drops smoky scotch (Ardbeg) and a discarded orange peel.

Further adventures in sling invention. This one is really freaking good. It just tastes like fresh summer fruit with a slight bitter edge and gin in it. Verdict: Damn. 1.5 oz Tanqueray Malacca, .75 oz Cocchi Americano Rosa, .75 Cherry Heering, .5 oz PX sherry, .5 oz fresh lime juice, half of a ripe strawberry, 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters, soda water. Muddle strawberry in shaker, add remaining ingredients, shake hard with ice and double strain into ice-filled Collins glass, top off with ~2.5 oz soda water and stir lightly.

Bought this very old bottle of Cherry Heering at an old liquor store in Newton for $15. I like that the label says “Peter Heering Liqueur” instead of Cherry Heering. Not sure how old this is.
